Position Summary
Position provides primary and/or specialty nursing and/or medical care in a variety of settings; works under physician oversight as required by state regulation, and functions within the scope of practice defined by the NP’s specialty certification, BJH medical by-laws, and, where it exists, the collaborative practice agreement.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- In collaboration with attending Epileptologists, evaluate and manage patients admitted to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) for characterization of events, and pre-surgical and surgical work-ups at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
- Co-coverage of rehabilitation patients admitted to the Neurology rehabilitation service.
- Works with the physician team for ongoing development of population-specific teaching tools for patients and families.
- Takes an active role in evaluating patients admitted to the EMU and Neurology rehabilitation service including history, physical and discharge, collecting, organizing, and entering related documentation in the medical record.
- Monitors the medical condition of patients, documenting and reporting changes as necessary to the EMU or Neurology team.
- Participates in team and family discussions related to patient status, progress, test results, and/or care plans for patients.
- Attends Epilepsy surgery conference (Mondays, 2:30 PM) and Neuro rehab team meetings (Mondays and Thursdays at 1 PM).
- Maintains a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with established clinic/hospital standards.
- Obtains and documents medical history, performs age-appropriate general physical and neurological exams, assesses patients’ conditions, and develops individual care plans for patients assigned.
- Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Enhances professional growth and development through educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
- Attends all relevant educational seminars and conferences and assists with population-specific guideline development/updates as indicated.
- Initiates appropriate diagnostic studies. Develops an individualized plan of care, in collaboration with other health team members as needed.
- Prescribes and regulates medications, evaluating appropriateness and effectiveness.
- Coordinates the care of select patient populations to ensure the promotion of health and wellness through education of patients/families, coordination of services, and placing referrals.
- Facilitates and documents development of comprehensive, individualized discharge and follow-up plan, in collaboration with health care team and family. Keeps patient/family involved in all aspects of the patient management process.
- Monitors/ensures the accuracy of patient medical records and maintains all required reports, records, and statistics. Dictates letters to referring physicians or for chart documentation as per division policies.
- Effectively demonstrates leadership qualities. Serves as a role model for professional communication and effective problem-solving.
Preferred Qualifications
- Holds current certification in patient care field and required specialty.
Required Qualifications
- Current MSN with emphasis in the Nurse Practitioner program. FNP or PNP
- APN licensure or ability to successfully obtain licensure within three months of date of hire.
- Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty.
- Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).

Salary Range
$82,900.00 – $149,300.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one’s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
