The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is seeking nursing applicants who are passionate about their profession and who will be committed to making a difference in the lives of Arizona’s underserved youth. Additionally our nurses will have the unique opportunity to work in behavioral health, public health, and emergency response settings at the Adobe Mountain School.

Job Duties:

Serving as a lead nurse and resource professional for the on-duty healthcare team

Providing direct patient and emergency care to youth

Conducting intake health screening evaluations for newly incarcerated youth

Evaluate youth submitted health concerns

Advise youth regarding health treatment procedures

Administering medications, and monitoring youth for potential adverse reactions

Monitoring, recording, and reporting changes in a youth’s vitals or health condition

Obtaining and processing blood, urine or other sample specimens

Consulting and coordinating youth treatment plans with health services team members

Maintain medical files and records

Ensuring medical supplies and equipment are stocked and accounted for

Assisting with annual tuberculosis (TB) skin tests and weekly COVID-19 testing

Performing other duties as appropriate to the assignment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of:

  • Emergency care procedures, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid
  • Basic nursing techniques, methods, and protocols
  • Administering medication
  • Specimen collection, including phlebotomy
  • Interpreting and implementing health care provider’s orders
  • Maintaining confidentiality

Skill in:

  • Maintaining medical records
  • Respecting professional boundaries
  • Adhering to Department security protocols
  • Evaluating physical and mental health needs of youth, including signs of suicide
  • Working as part of a team health services team

Ability to:

  • Act as a leader and resource person for the on duty health care team
  • Follow Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) rules and regulations
  • Stay current with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines
  • Communicate medical treatment plans simply and clearly
  • Operate a computer and use basic Office suite software
Pre-Employment Requirements:
Requires possession of a valid Registered Nurse Certification without restrictions in the State of Arizona or have a valid Registered Nurse Certification from a state that participates in the Interstate Nurse Licensure Compact.

Requires possession of, and ability to retain a current valid Arizona-issued driver’s license. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license records checks, maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).

Required to maintain a current healthcare professional CPR card

The selected candidate is required to successfully complete the following:
1. Panel Interview
2. Comprehensive Background Investigation
3. Fingerprinting
4. Drug Screening
5. Medical/Physical Examination

Arizona residency is required for this position.

Current State of Arizona employees: In order to be considered for this position, it requires acceptable performance history as demonstrated by no formal discipline within one year preceding this job posting close date, and an overall rating of “meets expectations” or higher on the most recent employee performance evaluation.

All new CRN employees will be provided two weeks of paid training. Training will be a mix of computer based training (CBT), classroom, and on-the-job training.

Training topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Suicide Prevention
  • Incident Reporting Procedures
  • Radio Usage and Radio Codes
  • Security and Safety
  • Emergency Procedures

Flexible Work Hours:

  • Correctional Registered Nurses are currently assigned to work a “4-10” schedule, which requires working four ten hour days, with three consecutive days off.
  • Available shift differential pay for nurses assigned to 2nd or 3rd shift
  • Three available work shift options:

-1st Shift: 5am – 3pm
-2nd Shift: 12pm – 10pm
-3rd Shift: 9pm – 7am
