The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts.

Richmond City Health District and Henrico Health Department (RHHD) is on the forefront of Public Health and Population Health and is looking for three innovative, flexible Public Health Nurses (PHN) to join our team. The Public Health Nurse independently provides professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes and schools and other community or congregate care settings. Performs nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management. Participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code. May supervise support staff.

This Public Health Nurse will work alongside a dedicated team of other RHHD PHNs and health professionals to provide health services to the following essential programs: Immunization, Family Planning, STI, TB, and PAS (Pre-Admission Screening), as well as additional community-based initiatives. In addition, the Public Health Nurses will participate in emergency preparedness, field operations, epidemiology investigations as they relate to communicable disease, and population health education. In addition, the PHN may conduct home visits, participate in mobile events and partner with organizations throughout the city on disease prevention and screening. The PHN will work in our downtown clinical office inclusive of our 7 satellite health clinics throughout the City located in low-income housing communities.. This position may require occasional weekend hours.

This position promotes public health and well-being for Richmond City residents. Additional skilled services will include: assists/participates with communicable disease epidemiological investigations, provides case management, and assures appropriate patient intervention and follow-up with abnormal laboratory results and other conditions. This PHN will promote awareness of health department and other community resources and coordinate referrals to outside agencies and physicians. Additionally, the PHN may assist in facilitating relationships among Richmond City Health District, Community-based health care providers and community members and is knowledgeable of social and economic conditions related to public health and public health nursing. The PHN will be able to display sound, independent nursing judgements, analyze and problem solve, and establish priorities, establish and maintain effective working relationships with the community.
