Nurses shortage in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland is an island nation in northwestern Europe with about 67,886,011 people. Before the pandemic hit, there was already a shortage of around 50,000 nurses and till now the shortage has not been bridged. 

It has been reported around 28 percent of nurses and health visitors leave the NHS within the first three years of their service, due to the complexity of the workforce. The shortage of nurses is a serious problem. According to a survey by Nursing, Times indicated that 80% of nurses feel patient safety is compromised due to this severe staff shortage.

Over recent years, work-life balance has increased as a reason for leaving, nearly three times more people citing it in 2019/20 than in 2011/12. 

Around 28 percent of nurses and health visitors leave the NHS within the first three years of their service, due to the complexity of the workforce. An NMC survey from last year found that the top reason for leaving the profession was retirement. After that, the most common reasons were: workload, personal circumstances, and “disillusionment with the quality of care provided to
