Under direct supervision of a physician or similar practitioner or higher-level Registered Nurse, the incumbent will serve as a Triage Nurse at the Student Health Center (SHC) at the San Bernardino and/or Palm Desert campuses performing the full range of standard nursing care duties following established procedures and protocols, including observing, interpreting, recording and reporting patients’ symptoms, reactions and behaviors. The Triage Nurse will escalate patient issues to a physician or other similar practitioner per protocols. The Triage Nurse will also be responsible for active participation in health education activities and training of health-related personnel. Additional duties include participation in health center and campus-wide committees when assigned.

Major duties and responsibilities

SHC Nursing

  • Utilizing established triage protocols, functions as a telephone/walk-in triage nurse by assessing patients’ signs and symptoms to determine and/or escalate for appropriate disposition and/or treatment
  • Escalates patient issues with scheduling, utilizes standing orders, provides first aid for minor injuries to students, staff, and faculty and campus visitors
  • With prior approval from individual providers, give students normal lab results; when lab results are not within normal limits, an appointment is scheduled with a rendering provider
  • Under standing orders, evaluates requests for hemoglobin testing including patient assessment, pregnancy options, counseling and appropriate referrals
  • Aligns with Student Health Center directives from the Chancellor’s Office, focusing on student related issues, such as homelessness, lack of health insurance, food insecurity

Medical Administration

  • Per provider request, contacts patients to give information regarding referral, prescriptions, and recheck appointments
  • Prepares patients for medical examinations and treatment
  • Performs routine laboratory testing such as urinalysis, hemoglobin, glucose, and urine pregnancy tests
  • Prepares lab samples obtained by medical providers for pick up by the lab
  • Assists with medical examinations and procedures as requested by clinic medical providers
  • Administers immunizations and medications per protocol
  • Provides education counseling on a wide variety of health topics including STIs, contraception, and hypertension
  • Performs therapeutic measures and nursing services as ordered by a physician or similar practitioner such as, but not limited to, performing TB and other skin tests, performing EKGs
  • Monitors MMR lab results, notify patients of results and have front office remove registration holds
  • Completes prior authorizations for psychiatric medications, fax copy to insurance company, chart information and notify patient/pharmacy of status
  • Assist providers through telehealth by preparation of the consult room, ensures successful video connection, reviews plan with patient and makes follow up appointments
  • Performs basic and CLIA-waived testing including obtaining specimens and assist in acquiring other tests for patients such as preparing requisitions for laboratory and X-ray work as ordered by a practitioner
  • Assists with adjusting clinic schedule as the need arises

Other

  • Contribute to Quality Improvement Studies, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Prevention and Accreditation efforts
  • Participates in the clinic and staff trainings, conferences and other presentations when appropriate
  • Participates in continuing education activities to keep current on pertinent topics as well as to complete ongoing licensure requirements
  • Participates in Student Health Center activities such as health fairs, immunization clinics and student orientations when assigned
  • Monitors follow up pap smears to ensure patients are returning for their yearly appointments
  • Monitors chlamydia and gonorrhea follow ups to ensure patients are returning for follow up appointments
  • Completes all department and university required trainings as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties supporting the SHC operations
  • Participates in division and University committees and initiatives as assigned

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Required Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, methods and procedures; anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties; medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice; and the uses and effects of medications and narcotics. Working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice limitations of clinic support staff.
  • Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and skills in performing nursing duties; accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis; respond with therapy to treatment reactions; use applicable health center automated systems to perform duties and maintain records and prepare reports; gain the cooperation of patients; analyze emergency situations and take prompt action; maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years post-graduate RN experience in student healthcare
  • Thorough knowledge of general methods, procedures, and practices of an outpatient medical facility
  • Working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice limitations of clinic support staff
  • Thorough knowledge of medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice; and the uses and effects of medications and narcotics
  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles
  • Working knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Working knowledge of software applications used in the Health Center
  • Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and skills in performing nursing duties
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
  • Ability to effectively apply specialized nursing skills
  • Ability to accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize, and plan work and projects
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,079 – $7,872 per month

Classification Salary Range: $4,079 – $7,872 per month

Position Information:

Work status: Part time/Non-exempt/Probationary

Schedule: 28 hours per week between the hours of 8am-5pm.

Background Check
